B.Sc. thesis supervision @ RUG

Since being appointed to a lecturer position in February 2023, I have supervised more than 20 B.Sc. and M.Sc. students in the fields of trustworthy AI, model compression and computer vision.

B.Sc. thesis guidelines

Notice that these guidelines, unless otherwise stated, are not official and refer to my personal experience and understanding of the process; it is hence a continuous work in progress: I learn with and from you students as well as you do from your teachers. If you feel that some of the guidelines shown in these pages are either unclear or they conflict with the official guidelines, please contact me.

The guidelines for the AI Department discourage B.Sc. students to propose their own projects. I support this idea since, the majority of the times, B.Sc. students lack (a) the relevant knowledge of the various fields of research in the AI world to be able to propose novel project ideas, and (b) the experience to understand the amount of work required to complete a complex project, i.e., they often underestimate time and energy needed to complete a project.

Nevertheless, I also encourage boldness: if you feel youโ€™re expert enough in a field and you have a good idea, Iโ€™m open to discuss it with you. Also, if you have an idea for a specific area for a project which I did not include in the official list of projects, Iโ€™m open to discuss it with you. If you would like to propose a project, please see the guidelines on this page.

For M.Sc. students

If you are a M.Sc. student interested in a thesis in my field of research, please contact me directly presenting your idea: I currenly lack the experience for a direct supervision of a M.Sc. thesis, but Iโ€™m open to discuss the possibility of co-supervision with a colleague.

However, you may have a look at the current list of projects and ideas to see if some of the proposed topics fits your interests, so we may discuss about turning it into a Masterโ€™s thesis and finding a co-supervisor.
